Since the invention of pigment, artists have created compelling experiences with the technologies available to them. Air (2009) is a generative audio-visual app for the iPhone and iPod touch created by musician / software designer Peter Chilvers with Irish vocalist Sandra O’Neill. It is centered around O’Neill’s vocal textures and a slowly changing image, based on concepts developed by musician Brian Eno, who is renowned for his embrace of “generative music”—music that is always changing based on a simple set of rules or instructions. Eno has said, “Air is like Music for Airports”—one of his most famous compositions—“made endless – which is how I always wanted it to be.” Look. Listen.
