The interdisciplinary design collaborative Rebar use a common mechanical technology for storing kinetic energy, the flywheel, to envision sustainable urban farming for the twenty-first century. Rebar employed this early invention and basic bicycle parts to build a pedal-powered alternative to the fossil-fuel driven tractor. With the Farmcycle (2010), urban farmers can mix compost, haul materials, store and transport tools, and deliver produce. Rebar’s prototype combines practical technology and fanciful design to address pressing environmental concerns.
