Feral Robotic Dog

Natalie Jeremijenko

Natalie Jeremijenko’s Feral Robotic Dog (2006) is a hacked version of the popular Sony AIBO toy. Instead of teaching it to sit or beg, Jeremijenko and her students would retrofit it with different capabilities, such as sensing pollutants. A “pack” of feral robotic dogs could then be released into the environment to both sense contamination and bring community and media attention to a known problem site. Feral Robotic Dog is designed to “exploit the popular culture references of these toys to involve youth in the interpretation of environmental conditions and a critique of the corporate imagination.”
