Sheryl Oring created I Wish to Say in 2004, upon returning to the United States after living in Berlin for six years. For this project, she dresses as a 1960s secretary, sets up a portable public office in parks and public squares – complete with a manual typewriter – and types postcards to the United States President. Oring has received a variety of grants and awards for this project including a Creative Capital grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship, and the “Person of the Week” award by ABC’s World News Tonight. In 2008, a solo exhibition of the work was presented at the Freedom Museum in Chicago.
Commissioned by ZER01 for the 3rd 01SJ Biennial, and presented with the support of the James Irvine Foundation.
