Office of Movement Advancement and Research (OMAR)

Nancy Nowacek

We believe an integral part of the future of the city is the future of the office and its workers. The office is the center-point from which the daily urban experience radiates, and is also the most physically stultifying. Our research period at 01SJ will examine the disembodying forces of the workday. From the office outward, we will target, examine and propose methods for breaking the habits formed by architecture, ergonomics, technology and social codes. Our research will confront the architecture of the modern office, its operational systems—circulation and workflow, and its social systems—coffee breaks, lunch breaks, happy hour. We will hack, build, talk and climb and rebel: we invite the workers of downtown San Jose as well as visitors to 01SJ to our headquarters during the biennial for assessment, counseling and training.
