Beatriz da Costa

Beatriz da Costa invented a “blogging backpack” for pigeons, which she first presented at the 1st 01SJ Biennial in 2006. da Costa and her colleagues combined a cell phone, pollution sensor, and and GPS device on a computer board weighing less than 6 ounces. When a carrier pigeon was released and returned to its coop, the device would capture pollution levels, associate them with is current location via GPS coordinates, and transmit the information in real time to a home base – hence blogging as it flew.
