Poetics of Dis-communication

Patrick Manning

Three steel monoliths containing large LCD screens, speakers, and computer and processing equipment will be installed near the San Fernando, Santa Clara, and Paseo de San Antonio stops. Input from web cameras built into the monolith will be scanned using custom text recognition software. The text derived from this information will be analyzed using speech recognition software. As a word or phrase is recognized, it will be played back over the speakers at each of the monoliths and be written to the LCD screens. When enough words/phrases have been collected, the intermixed utterances from the three locations will be “read” back as a poem using one of several computer synthesized voices as well as being displayed on the LCD. Previous poems play back on the screen as new poems are being built. All poems will be archived on the net and will be free to everyone.
