War Veteran’s Book Workshop

Monica Haller

This workshop is for war veterans from current conflicts to compile their images and words from combat into “booklets” of 50 to 300 pages each. To do this, participants embed their materials into the workshop’s template and software. The template is designed to provide structure and grounding for unstable digital pictures and traumatic memories, yet flexible enough for individuals to re-invent a world based on those memories. The final booklets are mobile and tactile, with potential to disseminate through a large population.

Each participant takes home his or her own book to share with family and friends. Then her book becomes part of a larger unit, where each story is individually important, but part of a greater whole. What will be the political and testimonial significance when we gather many people’s voices and pictures together? What will that collective story look like?

Workshop:
There are two types of workshops to account for various schedules, the weekend intensive and the weekday workshop. The later will operate like an open studio, where a few book makers will be working. At this workshop there will be lots of one-on-one time. Stop by to talk with book-makers or check out the process!

Veterans Book Workshop Reception
The artist will host a reception on behalf of the Veterans Book Workshop on Saturday, September 18. This is the reception for family, friends, book makers, writers and all the other people in the community who want to read and are helping out.

We are building a world dedicated to this discovery.
