White Out, which is part of an ongoing project called Environmental Anxiety Wearables, provides a tongue-in-cheek look at the tendency for people to exaggerate their environmental efforts to change the world as a way to improve their own personal image. Based off a ridiculous geo-engineering schemes to halt global warming, during AbsoluteZER0 the artist will ask participants to help save the environment by constructing and wearing white hats that will reflect back the heat of the sun as a way to make up for the white surface area being lost in the melting polar ice caps.

Commissioned by ZER01 for the 3rd 01SJ Biennial, and presented with the support of the James Irvine Foundation.

Earth Speaks is an online project led by Douglas Vakoch to collect messages from people around the world, representing what they would want to say to intelligent life beyond Earth: http://earthspeaks.seti.org/. In addition to focusing on the content of messages that might be sent to extraterrestrial intelligence, the exhibit at AbsoluteZERO will emphasize the complex interplay of art, science, and ethics as participants grapple with questions central to Earth Speaks, such as

- “Should the usual standards of anonymity of research participants be abandoned if people want to talk about themselves in their messages?”
- “Even after we’ve decided what we want to say, how should we say it?”
- “In what way is creating messages to extraterrestrials artistic? In what way is it scientific?”

Earth Speaks–La Tierra Habla. Image courtesy Everett Taasevigen

As the SETI Institute’s Allen Telescope Array begins a new phase of research with its galactic plane survey, the chances of detecting a signal from an extraterrestrial civilization increases considerably. If we do detect an extraterrestrial civilization, one of the most pressing issues facing humankind will be “Should we reply, and if so, what should we say?” For many years, the SETI Institute has engaged scholars from a range of disciplines in addressing this issue, through a series of workshops organized by the grant proposer that broadly examined the cultural aspects of SETI, as well as through international workshops and conference symposia more narrowly focused in interstellar messages. None of those venues, however, solicited broad-based input from the global community, although it is often noted that a reply from Earth should be sent on behalf of all of humankind.

Angel Borrego Cubero/OSS

Puentes Mutantes/Mutant Bridges is part of a larger series of works called Science Friction. Architecture’s recurring (and engineering’s more stable) claims of being a branch of science are at once questioned, and made use of, with the intention of empowering citizens in their relationship to public space and the way it is constructed. In this respect Puentes Mutantes/Mutant Bridges tries to exploit the actual nature of both disciplines, which is the projecting of an alternative future.

Bridge structures were historically used as places in themselves, becoming the foundation for housing, commerce, and types of exchanges, other than merely as thoroughfares. Puentes Mutantes/Mutant Bridges explores a number of local bridges from the iconic Golden Gate to the Bixby Creek Bridge as systems for conviviality between humans and other species, placing look-outs, jumping and inscription structures, pedestrian and cyclist connections, reclamation spaces for non-humans, cross-species hotels for short-term nature appreciation, swinging-by-the-wind tea houses, and more.

Sunday, September 19, 2:00pm- 4:00pm. Location: Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco

The history of computer-based art practice goes back to at least the 1968 Cybernetic Serendipity exhibition at the ICA in London, yet digital art is only now starting to attract the attention of collectors in greater numbers. Digital art milestones such as; Listening Post by Ben Rubin and Mark Hansen, the thrilling public spectacles of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, and the break-through LED works of Jim Campbell have been collected by a few pioneer institutions and brave individuals, but these works and others like them can be daunting to collectors. They present new and unusual technical, legal, and maintenance obstacles that can inhibit collectors and thus the market and thus support for a whole class of artists.

Prominent collectors, critics, and artists on this panel will explore the historical dynamics of collecting digital art and building an art market for challenging work. They will discuss their personal experiences and professional opinions about the lessons to be learned to effect a robust collecting environment for the kind of remarkable work seen at the 01SJ Biennial and a very few other venues around the world.

All ticket holders are invited to join us for a reception following the discussion.

Starting at South Hall

The Green Prix is a parade and all day festival that surrounds sustainable, ecological friendly, and fun modes of transportation—artful “eco-motion.” It is open for EVERYONE: artists, designers, families, schools, and anyone else who has or wants to create a new mode of sustainable transportation. It is your opportunity to create, participate in, and cheer on innovative projects related to eco-themed transportation. So break out your banana-bikes, self-propelled jet packs, soapboxes, and solar cars to come out and strut your stuff in front of a cheering audience. The Green Prix Parade will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 18th. Then the Green Prix Festival will fill South 1st Street with “green” creations, parade projects, family oriented do-it-yourself workshops, open doors to local galleries and music performances. Check out the Parade Route.
